This course is particularly helpful for the growing number of people who find themselves asked to produce minutes of meetings. Some people may only note-take and produce the minutes at meetings, whereas some may also need to participate in the meeting at the same time which is not easy! 


Course objectives

To develop minute taking techniques and increase confidence in doing so, using theory and practice. 


Content

Importance of preparation for formal and informal minutes. 

Agenda content, layout and purpose. 

Participation versus taking notes in a manageable format. 

Note taking in the meeting. 

Working in partnership with the chairperson. 

Meeting terminology. 

Deciding ‘what’ to write down. 

Organising the notes taken. 

Correct presentation and layout of formal and informal minutes, including numbering and paragraphs. 

Writing concise and accurate minutes. 

Confidentiality and ‘freedom of information’ act. 

 

There are a number of practical exercises in this course: 

- Agenda wording, content and layout. 

- Re-writing an ‘incorrectly worded’ set of minutes. 

- Note taking in two actual meetings. 

- Creating a set of minutes from notes taken. 

- Comparing the delegates’ minutes with correct examples.
